Lots of children have a pet at home, or a friend or grandparent with one. That makes pets an easy way into the idea that different animals live in different places. A cat curls up on the couch. A lion does not.

This worksheet shows eight animals. Four are pets that live in our homes: the puppy, the cat, the hamster and the goldfish in its bowl. The other four are a polar bear, a giraffe, a crocodile and a lion. Your child circles the animals that live in our homes and leaves the wild ones alone.

It's a gentle sheet for preschool and kindergarten. The pictures do most of the work, so children who can't read yet only need you to read the instructions once. Drawing a circle around each pet is good practice for pencil control.

There's plenty to talk about afterwards. Ask what each pet needs to be happy: food, water, a bed, a walk for the dog, a clean bowl for the fish. Then ask why a giraffe wouldn't fit in the house, or what a crocodile would want for dinner. If you have a pet, let your child tell you which animal on the page is most like it.
