Young children often know more dinosaur names than adults do. They'll say "Parasaurolophus" without blinking while you're still working out where the syllables go.

If a child will sit still for anything, it's probably a dinosaur, so they're a handy way to sneak in some scissor practice.

This sheet has eight dinosaurs, each in its own circle with a dashed cutting line: a T. rex, a Triceratops, a Stegosaurus, a Brachiosaurus, a Velociraptor, an Ankylosaurus, a Spinosaurus and a Parasaurolophus.

The name sits under each picture, so kids can match the word to the dinosaur as they go.

Turning the page while cutting a curve builds hand strength and control, which children need later for writing.

The circles vary in size, so start with the large ones and save the smaller circles for when your child has the hang of it. Child-safe scissors and a grown-up nearby are a good idea.

Every dinosaur has a story worth telling. T. rex had tiny arms but huge teeth. Triceratops had three horns and a big bony frill. Stegosaurus had plates down its back and spikes on its tail.

Brachiosaurus used its long neck to reach the tops of trees. Velociraptor was only about the size of a turkey and had feathers. Ankylosaurus was covered in armor and swung a club at the end of its tail.

Once the cutouts are done, try a sorting game. Put the meat eaters (T. rex, Velociraptor and Spinosaurus) in one pile and the plant eaters in another.

You can also hide the cutouts in a sandbox or a tray of rice and let kids dig them up like fossil hunters.
