Living vs non-living. This is a question that has puzzled people for centuries.
While there are some things that seem to be clearly alive, like animals and plants, there are other things that don't appear to be alive at all, like rocks and planets.
So what makes something living or non-living and you can decide for yourself which group they belong to?
Non-living things are inanimate objects that cannot move, grow, or reproduce on their own.
They are not alive because they don't have the basic characteristics that all living things share.
These characteristics include the ability to respire, metabolize, grow, and reproduce.
Non-living things may be able to do one or two of these things, but not all of them. For example, a rock can't move or reproduce on its own, but it can grow (if it is buried under soil, for example).
Living things, on the other hand, are able to do all of the above. They are animate beings that can move, respire, metabolize, grow, and reproduce.
