The ocean is full of animals that look like they came out of a storybook. An animal with eight arms, a fish that looks like a tiny horse, a jelly you can see right through. Kids can stare at them for ages.

On this page there are eight ocean animals, each inside a circle with a dashed line to cut along: a whale, a dolphin, an octopus, a sea turtle, a starfish, a jellyfish, a seahorse and a shark.

Each one is labeled, so new readers can sound out the names as they work.

Cutting curves asks a lot of little hands. Children have to hold the scissors steady, turn the paper with the other hand and keep their eyes on the line.

Starting with the biggest circles makes it easier. Child-safe scissors and a grown-up close by are best for the youngest kids.

Once the animals are cut out, build an ocean. Color a sheet of paper blue, add some green seaweed and a sandy bottom, and glue the animals where you think they'd swim.

A shoebox turned on its side makes a simple underwater scene, with the animals hanging from string so they look like they're floating.

There's something to learn about every animal. Whales and dolphins breathe air, so they have to come up to the surface. An octopus has three hearts.

A starfish isn't a fish at all, which is why scientists call it a sea star. A jellyfish has no brain. And with seahorses, it's the dad who carries the babies until they hatch.
